Embroidery has ancient origins, with some of the earliest examples found in China and the near East. Fossilized remains of hand-stitched clothing have been discovered in Europe. In China you would often see embroidery in adorn silk, robes, tapestry, and ceremonial garments.

During the Middle Ages embroidery flourished in the European and Islamic world often used for religious textiles and decorative clothing.

During the Renaissance, embroidery became even more elaborate. European courts used silk, gold and silver threads to embellish gowns and household textiles. It was during this time that the technique 'stumpwork' gained popularity. By the Baroque Era embroidery had become luxury. French and Italian artisans created ornate patterns inspired by royal fashion.

In the 19th and 20th century, embroidery machines were introduced. Embroidery became popular and easily accessible in home decor, linens and fashion.
