I found this huge painting of my father’s in storage at my parent’s home. At the time, we were right in the middle of planning out our new showroom space for our Montgomery location. The painting is so large that he and I had to carry it outside and open it up to look at it fully. I took photos of it with my phone and hoped I could mix it in with the colorful kilm rug from the showroom. My father painted this painting as part of a series of enormous abstracts specifically for an art exhibition he was invited to be a part of which traveled between different museums in 1978. He developed and specially built the canvas stretchers for these paintings with hinges in the center for they could be folded and transported more easily. An early memory of mine is waking up and walking across our backyard to his studio to watch him paint. I even had a pjs marked with the paint I had picked up from my visits. It turns out that the size, 9 feet wide, fits perfectly within the space we created on the back wall and the contemporary, abstract painting works well with the geometric tribal rug! The title of the work is, Fly By, and it’s scale and liveliness really add energy to the new space. It’s a joy to see it have a new life and to see my father smile when I tell him that yet another visitor has admired his painting.
