The January Birthstone is Garnet, derived from the Latin word granatum, meaning pomegranate seed. Garnets are most well known for their deep red color, but are also found in shades of yellow, olive green, pale pink, and orange. During the Bronze Age, garnet was used to carve signet rings to proclaim royalty. In the middle ages, this stone was well known to possibly guard against poison. Royals would often drop a garnet gemstone into a glass of wine to ensure they were not poisoned to death! This stone forms under high temperatures and pressure.
